Description
Two pairs of semi-detached villas at numbers 38, 38B, 40, and 42 Linden Gardens date from circa 1827 and were likely designed by Thomas Allason, the surveyor for the Ladbroke Estate. The buildings are constructed of yellow stock brick with slated hipped roofs and overhanging eaves. They display a rural design, mirroring the styles popular in country-villa pattern books of the period.
Numbers 38 and 38B each feature a single window, with a central, blind window. The ground floor of these properties projects slightly forward, accentuated by a shallow stuccoed pediment spanning the entire width. Central, paired entrances are framed by pilasters and flanked by recessed sash windows. The returns at the rear have three windows, and number 38 includes a four-window extension.
Number 40 has a recessed first-floor window, while the ground floor projects forward with a shallow stuccoed pediment over a pilastered entrance featuring a half-glazed panelled door, paired with the entrance to number 42. The ground floor continues forward in a curve around the right-hand angle. The right-hand return features a projecting semi-circular bay with a single window. Number 42 has been altered, with the right-hand two windows paired; these are segmental arched sashes. It has an entrance paired with number 40 and a two-light bay window with side lights. Numbers 40 and 42 are included on the list for their group value.
