Description
The rockery located in the northeastern segment of the Chelsea Physic Garden is a Grade II listed structure. It was constructed using volcanic stone from Mount Hecla in Iceland, which was brought back by Joseph Banks in 1772, and is supplemented with rubble from the Tower of London. The rockery is roughly circular, measuring 15 metres across and standing 1.5 metres high. It features a later addition of a small, oval pool at the top. This rockery is likely the first intentionally built rock garden for plants in Europe.
