Description
The railings surrounding the central garden in Wilmington Square were built between 1819 and 1841 and are made of cast iron. They feature spear-headed bars with pineapple finials on the standards. Wilmington Square was developed from the Spa Fields Estate of the Earls of Northampton, with the ninth Earl assigning it to his heir, Lord Compton, in 1817. This square was one of the first developments in London after the Waterloo period. However, due to financial constraints, the square was reduced in depth, leading it to become somewhat isolated on the outskirts of other estates.
