Description

These are terraced houses located at 20 Bunhill Row, built between 1830 and 1831 for the Honourable Artillery Company. The houses are constructed from yellow and brown brick in Flemish bond, with stucco details and roofs that are hidden behind a parapet. Originally, there were ten houses in the row, each with two windows, but the entrances of the former numbers 22 to 28 have been blocked, leaving a row of six houses.

The entrance features a cambered arch with a wooden doorcase that has panelled pilasters, a cornice, and an overlight. Most openings were likely originally cambered-arched, but the first floors of numbers 20, 21, 23, 25, and the former number 28 now have flat-arched windows. The ground-floor windows have scrolled keystones, with the window of number 21 featuring a splayed embrasure. A stucco sill band on the first floor is inscribed at the north end with 'ARTILLERY PLACE WEST'. There are iron balconies decorated with Greek key and anthemion motifs, and a cartouche displaying the coat of arms of the Honourable Artillery Company is positioned between each pair of first-floor windows. The ground and first-floor windows, except for the ground floor of number 21, have 6/6 sashes of original design, while the second floor features 3/6 sashes of original design.

The houses have a moulded stucco cornice, and there is an attic storey for numbers 20-21 and the northern part of numbers 27 and 29. Chimney stacks are located on the party walls, raised to the ridge level of the four-storey houses. The rear elevations, which face into the former New Artillery Fields, have segmental bays.
