Description

No. 28 Britton Street is a three-storey building with a basement and garret, constructed in the 18th century. The front facade features red-brown brick laid in Flemish bond, accented with red brick dressings and gauged flat window arches. The windows are late 20th-century six-over-six-light sliding sashes with horns. The ground floor is rendered and includes a 19th-century style shop window. It is believed that all external joinery is a late 20th-century replication of earlier designs.

The building has a two-bay layout with a double-pitched roof that has a valley gutter running parallel to the road. The original 18th-century floor plan is preserved, consisting of a ground-floor entrance hall with a dog-leg stair along the right-hand party wall, and front and back rooms on each floor. A modern extension at the basement and upper-ground-floor levels connects to the full depth of the plot.

The entrance, located to the right, features a six-panel door flanked by pilasters. A fascia and cornice extend across the front, with a 19th-century style shop window to the left of the door. The first- and second-floor windows are nearly flush with the wall, while the garret room has continuously glazed side-hung timber casement windows.

Inside, No. 28 retains characteristics of the early 18th century, with full-height unmoulded wall panelling in the rooms. The front rooms have fireplaces in the party wall, and the back rooms feature corner fireplaces. The staircase showcases turned vase balusters with a moulded handrail and closed string. Some of the panelling is believed to be original, influencing the design of the rest of the panelling throughout the building. The staircase includes original newel posts, handrails, and some balusters, although several balusters are modern reproductions.
