Description

Turnpike Lane London Regional Transport Underground Station is a Grade II listed London Underground station, built in 1932 by Charles Holden. The station features red brick with grey diaper infill to reinforced concrete, and the concrete frame is partially exposed. A concrete roof slab is expressed as a broad cornice band under deep eaves. The building has a rectangular plan that makes bold use of its corner site, with a single-storey double entrance under a curved slab that rises to a booking hall, which is double height but partially sunken. The booking hall is flanked by two ventilation towers, with the one facing Green Lanes displaying the 'Underground' logo.

All windows are metal-framed with a strong horizontal emphasis. The ends of the booking hall have five-light windows, while the Green Lanes side features a tripartite composition, with the opposite wall containing blind openings. The sunken ground floor of the hall is tiled in brown, retaining original floor tiles and a central bronze uplighter, which is semi-hemispherical on a tapered and fluted column set in a square base. An original sign points to the 'BUS STATION'. The cream escalator hall leads to platforms that are tiled in cream and deep yellow, featuring fixed inset seats and decorative incised ventilation covers by Harold Stabler above original fully lined-out roundels. The offices between the towers retain original fenestration and some fittings.
