Description
The Church of St Andrew by the Wardrobe, built between 1685 and 1695 by Sir Christopher Wren, is located on Queen Victoria Street in London. This Grade I listed church features an aisled design with five bays and a tower at the west end of the south aisle. The exterior is constructed of red brick with Portland stone dressings. It has two tiers of windows, with segmental arches below and round arches above. The north side displays a painted entablature from the late 18th century, topped with a parapet. The south side has a corniced doorway and an entablature of Portland stone, though much of the 19th-century embellishments have been removed. Both the east and west elevations are adorned with a wooden modillion cornice and a central pediment, with a pedimented doorway on the west. The plain tower features stone bands, a cornice with a parapet, and a single weathervane. Inside, the church has an arcaded layout with square piers and a plaster vault. The galleries, which have space beneath that is now enclosed, include a lobby at the west end. Notable interior features include an original carved pulpit on a new base, a font cover, and a pair of brackets supporting the west gallery. The interior was damaged during World War II but has been reconstructed to closely resemble its original design.
