Description
Richard of Chichester Catholic Secondary School is a school building located on Prince of Wales Road, constructed in 1849. It was designed by architects Thomas Henry Wyatt and David Brandon and originally served as the 'Aged Governesses Asylum'. The building was altered and enlarged between 1877 and 1879 for its use as Camden School for Girls, with modifications made by E.C. Robins. The structure is made of ragstone and features slate roofs, standing two storeys high with three gabled bays. The central bay includes a two-storey bay window adorned with small gargoyles at the corners, positioned at the cornice level.
The school is accompanied by notable gates and railings. Both pairs of double gates were sourced from other locations and are designed in a style reminiscent of the early 18th century, influencing the design of the railings. The wrought-iron gates feature a right-hand segmental arch with a scrolled overthrow that includes the initials "GI". The openwork box piers are topped with scrollwork and finials. The left double gates showcase delicate scrollwork in the overthrow and similarly styled openwork box piers with intricate scrollwork and finials. The railings are topped with urn finials and include alternating rails with a double curved motif inspired by the gates.
