Description
The Institute of Chemistry of Great Britain and Ireland, built between 1913 and 1914 by Sir JJ Burnet, is a notable brown brick building with stone dressings. It stands three storeys high, with an attic and semi-basement, and features seven windows, including a three-window return to Russell Square. The entrance is square-headed, framed in stone with an open segmental pediment and a seated figure of Sir Joseph Priestley above a heavy panelled door. The building has square-headed, recessed sash windows, with those to the right of the entrance being round-headed and set in shallow arched recesses, complete with keystones and linked by stone impost bands. Above the entrance, there is a round-headed sash window adorned with a carved stone wreath. The first-floor windows to the left of the door have stone sill bands and balconies, while a stone sill band is present on the third floor. The building is topped with a bracketed cornice and a parapet. The interior has not been inspected. Additionally, there are attached cast-iron railings with urn finials surrounding the areas.
