Description
Number 46 is a terraced house dating from the mid-19th century, constructed of yellow stock brick with a stucco ground floor, featuring quoins on the upper floors and decorative dressings. The building stands three storeys tall with a semi-basement and has one window. The entrance consists of a panelled door with an overlight, situated in the side of a canted bay that it shares with the adjacent house on the right. This entrance is accessed by a curved flight of steps, which are accompanied by attached cast-iron railings topped with spearhead finials.
To the right of the door, there is a narrow window in the canted bay that has margin glazing with stained glass in the margins. To the left of the entrance is a sash window with similar glazing. A cornice at the first-floor level projects over the bay and is topped by a continuous pierced stucco balustrade. The first-floor window features paired arched sashes with keystone heads, vermiculated spandrels, and a moulded architrave surround with shaped lugs. This is complemented by a cornice on enriched brackets that forms the sill for a smaller second-floor window, which has a moulded architrave and moulded keystone flanked by enriched consoles that replace the cornice. The building is finished with a cornice and a blocking course.
The interior has not been inspected. The house is accompanied by attached cast-iron railings with spearhead finials to the areas. Historically, Karl Marx lived in this house from September 1856 to Easter 1864, during which he worked on the first book of "Das Kapital," and "Zur Kritik de politischen Okonorm" was published while he resided here. At that time, the house was known as No. 9 Grafton Terrace.
