Description
The barn at Colts Hall Farm is a 14th-century structure that was remodeled in the 17th century. It features weatherboarding over a timber frame and has a half-hipped roof made of pantiles and corrugated iron. The barn has an aisled five-bay plan with a central threshing floor and includes plank double doors leading to a lean-to porch. Inside, there are 14th-century unjowled aisle posts with lateral bracing to the arcade plates and passing braces from the sole plates of the aisles to the aisle posts, which are halved into aisle tie beams. There are also bolted 19th-century knee braces inserted beneath the tie beams. The roof is from the 17th century, consisting of side purlins with raking side struts, lower butt purlins, and upper clasped purlins to the collars. This barn is one of about 15 medieval barns remaining in Suffolk.
