Description
The Church of St Mary and St Martin is a parish church located on Church Lane in Kirton. The nave and chancel date from the 16th century, and the tower was rebuilt in the same century. The church underwent significant alterations in the mid-19th century when a north aisle was added. The tower is constructed of septaria, flint, and brick, featuring a string course of brick and a battlemented belfry stage. The nave and chancel are made of septaria and flint, with repairs done in red brick, and the south wall of the nave is stuccoed. The tower includes two diagonal, stepped buttresses, a 14th-century west doorway with a moulded pointed arch, and a panel window above the brick dressings to the stonework. The belfry has louvred windows with pointed brick arches and jambs, along with Y tracery. Inside the church, there is a 13th-century font with a square bowl on a round shaft supported by four detached columns, a 15th-century piscina, and a blocked south doorway.
