Description

Port House is the former customs house and associated offices of the Port of Lowestoft, built in 1831. The building is made of gault brick and features hipped roofs covered in slate.

The layout of the building resembles a lowercase 't', with a long range facing south, central transepts, and a return wing at the east end. It is a two-storey structure with a long southern elevation and a central transept. The transept has one six-over-six sash window on the first floor, all windows are similarly styled with gauged-brick arches. To the right of the transept, there are five ground-floor sash windows, along with two 20th-century windows in blocked doorways. On the first floor, there are three sash windows on each side of the transept, some of which have been replaced. The central doorway is flanked by one sash window on each side at the ground floor, and the building has a shallow hipped roof with five stacks located to the left.

The east elevation serves as the entrance and consists of four bays. It features a late 20th-century pedimented porch in the second bay from the left, with one sash window on the left and two on the right. There are four identical sash windows on the first floor.

Inside, there is an open well staircase at the west end, which has two turned balusters for each tread, a moulded handrail, and heavy turned newels with ball finials. The rest of the interior has been modernised for office use.
