Description
The Church of St Mary is a Grade I listed building located on high ground to the south of Kersey village. This church, constructed in the 14th and 15th centuries, features a north aisle built around 1335, with the tower's foundations laid at that time and completed in 1481. The west tower consists of four stages, diagonal buttresses, a castellated parapet adorned with flint chequerwork, and an octagonal stair turret, making it a prominent landmark.
The south porch has two bays, with buttresses that rise to crocketted pinnacles, chequerwork panels on the front, and a castellated parapet also featuring chequerwork. Inside, the ceiling showcases moulded and carved beams along with carved panels. The north porch is similar but less ornate. The chancel was rebuilt in 1862. The nave roof is supported by hammer beams that alternate with tie beams, featuring arched braces that meet at the center.
Interior fittings include two fonts, one from the 12th century and another from the 15th century, along with a 15th-century lectern and chancel screen. The north aisle contains a defaced stone carved frieze.
