Description
The building at 22 and 24 High Street comprises shops and offices with accommodation above, originating from an earlier 18th-century timber-framed structure. It was significantly altered in the mid to later 19th century with a new brick facade and roof. The building is constructed of red brick and has a black glazed pantile roof with coped gable ends and overhanging eaves supported by modillions.
Number 24 is two storeys high with four windows. The windows are sash windows, with only two retaining glazing bars. A pilastered doorway is centrally positioned on the right side, featuring an entablature, cornice, panelled reveals, and a glazed door. Number 22 is three storeys high (but of a similar height to number 24) and also has four windows, with a recessed central section. The ground floor has been converted to a large 19th-century shop with a fascia cornice and carved consoles. The windows on the upper floors are small, plain sash windows.
The rear of the building retains 18th-century fabric, faced with painted brick and featuring two gables and sash windows, some of which have glazing bars. Plastered timber framing is visible at the north-west corner of the rear elevation.
