Description
Soane's Music Room, located at the north-east corner of the wilderness north of Earsham Hall, was built in 1784 by Sir John Soane. This small rectangular brick building features a fine ashlar facade, complete with a parapet and cornice. The advanced three-bay center is supported by four Ionic engaged columns, which hold up a pediment adorned with a medallion and garlands. Between the columns is a central glazed door topped by a large semi-circular traceried fanlight with a keyblock. On either side of the door, there are tall straight-headed windows, with square lights above them. A moulded string course runs over similar windows in the flanking bays, although these do not have lights above. Inside, the room boasts a coffered segmental vaulted ceiling with a modillion cornice, and there are alcoves at each end, each featuring a coffered vault. The front area is enclosed by iron railings and paved. This building is illustrated in Soane's "Plans Elevations and Sections of buildings in Norfolk, Suffolk etc." from 1788.
