Description

Hempnall House is a house dating to the late 16th century, with a 17th-century extension and a front pile added in 1871, along with later additions. The original rear section has a timber frame faced with colour-washed brick, and a fishscale slate roof, with concrete tiles to the rear pitch. It is rectangular in plan, with an off-centre axial stack. The east gable-end is of 19th-century brick with a crowstepped parapet. It has two storeys and an attic to the east of the stack, with scattered casement windows, including one surviving ovolo-moulded mullion window. The east gable-end features two sash windows beneath skewback arches. Two modern outshuts are located to the north. Inside, there are two queen-post trusses to the west of the stack, and two bays east of the stack with upper crucks. The 1871 front pile is of gault brick with a slate roof, with a symmetrical three-bay plan and a projecting enclosed central porch. It has a pair of stacks to the rear wall, two storeys, and tripartite sashes with vertical glazing bars and horns underneath skewback arches to the side bays. A panelled front door includes a rectangular fanlight, set within a plain doorcase with a hood on brackets displaying a date. Above the door is a single sash window with vertical glazing bars and horns. The porch has a crowstepped gable with obelisk kneelers and a studded globe to the apex, along with crowstepped gable-ends. It also features a guilloche-moulded median stringcourse and a moulded dentil cornice. Later extensions are located to the west.
