Description

There are two First World War pillboxes located to the north and south of Bacton Road in Little London, constructed between 1916 and 1918.

Both pillboxes feature concrete block walls, a concrete roof slab supported by steel beams, and steel doors with gun loop shutters. They have a circular plan with a single entrance leading to one internal space.

Inside, the northern pillbox is an open-plan area with un-rendered blockwork walls and a white-painted roof. The gun loops have steel frames, with hooks above the central section for removable shutters. There are two holes in the roof that may have held ventilation pipes. The southern pillbox has a similar interior, also featuring gun loop frames.

On the exterior, the northern pillbox is located close to Bacton Road, within the grounds of Royston House. It is slightly sunk below ground level, with roughly pointed concrete block walls topped by curved blocks around the roof slab, which is a single piece of cast concrete. There are five gun loops positioned around the pillbox: three facing north-east, one to the north-west, and one to the south-east. A low, narrow doorway facing south-west is without doors.

The southern pillbox mirrors the design, construction, and size of the northern one. It is situated next to a bend in the road, east of the northern pillbox. It also has five gun loops: one facing north, one south, two towards the east, and one to the west next to the doorway, which retains its original steel double doors with a bolt and hasp on the outside.
