Description

The building is a Methodist chapel dating from 1898, designed by Edwin Lutyens. Constructed of brick with tile and pebbledash detailing, it features a hipped pantile roof. The rectangular plan is dominated by an eastern entrance recessed beneath six tiers of semicircular brick arches, which gradually diminish towards the jambs. Radiating bands of tiles within the arch extend vertically across the east face and one forms the keystone. Moulded brick shafts define the upper corners. A clerestory rises from the hipped roof, incorporating a single Diocletian window on the east side. The brick side walls have no windows, with pitched roofs extending to brick piers supporting lead-covered beams. Four Diocletian windows are present in the clerestory on both the north and south sides. Inside, semicircular cupboards with keystones are positioned on either side of the entrance, and the chapel retains late 19th-century fittings. Related house and garden designs by E.L. Lutyens and Laurence Weaver date to 1913.
