Description

Tilney Old Hall is a late 16th-century house of an irregular plan. It is constructed of brick and has thatched roofs. The house is two storeys high. The south front features a cross wing to the right. A two-storey gabled porch of square plan is centrally positioned in the main block, with a round arched entrance now leading to a 20th-century door. The gable head of the porch has been rebuilt. The south front has renewed casements, with three-light cross casements to the right of each floor; the other windows are two-light mullioned. A dentil eaves cornice is present on the right bay. The roof is gabled. The cross wing has a longer roof slope to the west to accommodate the staircase. The gable wall of the cross wing is pierced by four openings of irregular disposition, all under segmental arches, showing some tumbling in the gable head. A ridge stack, with a square plinth carrying quadruple square flues, sits over the junction of the wings.

Inside, the dining room has a chamfered bridging beam with tongue stops. An inglenook fireplace is present. A winder staircase, running up to the attic, survives by the stack. The roof structure consists of principals and curved collars with one tier of through purlins.

Forecourt walls extend southwards, terminating in brick piers.
