Description
Nos. 8 and 9 South Quay are two houses that were built as one structure in the early 19th century. They are made of red brick and topped with a slate roof, standing two storeys high with an attic storey. The building features six bays, with the central two bays projecting forward. Brick string courses separate the storeys, and the first and smaller attic storeys have sash windows with glazing bars set within gauged skewback arches.
The ground floor has been altered due to the former use of No. 10 as a public house. No. 8, located to the north, consists of only two bays of the overall six-bay structure. It has a panelled door on the right, which is topped by an overlight and framed by a timber doorcase. To the left of this door is a sash window similar to those above. The entrance to No. 10 is centrally located without a doorcase, with a sash window to its left, separating the two entrances. There is a single-storey bay added between the former arched carriage entrance, which is glazed in, and the door of No. 10. The building has a gabled roof featuring a central hexagonal tile-hung glazed look-out cupola, and there are internal gable end stacks.
Inside No. 10, there is an open-string staircase with stick balusters and a ramped handrail.
