Description

The Church of St Mary is a disused medieval church, largely dating to around 1850 with a medieval west tower. The chancel and south chapel were designed in the 1850s by Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin for the Reverend Augustus Sutton. The church is constructed of flint with ashlar and brick dressings, featuring decorative plaintile roofs with traceried ridge tiles.

The west tower is of the 15th century, featuring diagonal buttresses with flushwork decoration, a plinth bearing the names of benefactors in raised Gothic lettering, a 2-light panel-traceried west window, and 2-light bell openings beneath 4-centred arches. A crenellated parapet with crocketted corner pinnacles tops the tower. The nave and north aisle have been heavily restored, including refacing and new tracery. The north aisle has a double-pitched roof and five 2-light windows, along with a single 3-light window, all in the Decorated style. The south wall has three 2-light Y-traceried windows and a south porch with a doorway in the 14th century style. A south chapel adjoins the church, including an arched tomb recess. The east wall features a small lancet cutting into the angle between the chapel and chancel. The chancel is taller than the nave, with a Sanctus bell cote on the gable and gabled buttresses. It has three 2-light south windows, a 5-light east window, and three similar 2-light windows to the north, all in the Decorated style. A vestry incorporates a timber-framed stair turret leading to the organ loft.

Inside, a plain chamfered tower arch is supported by carved angels. An early 14th century 4-bay arcade has quatrefoil piers and hollow-chamfered arches of two orders. Two 19th-century crossing arches are in the 14th century manner, the western one with wave moulding and the eastern one with filletted shafts and deep arch mouldings. The south chapel features an elaborate tomb canopy in memory of Mary Sutton, composed of painted stone and six marble shafts supporting trilobe arches with crocketted gables. A cusped piscina is located in the nave. A painted parclose screen in the north aisle displays tracery in a late-Medieval style, while the sanctuary has an elaborate 14th century cusped tomb recess. A chancel screen displays tracery, painting, and a rood loft. Some choir stalls and a wooden triple sedilia remain in the chancel. A cusped piscina is present. There is an elaborate stone and marble reredos featuring carved figures beneath canopies, along with fine encaustic tiles. A cantilevered organist's balcony with painted figures (the organ having been removed) exists, alongside a painted chancel roof. A 14th century octagonal font features angel corbels. Stained glass is by Hardman. The church is situated within the Stanford Battle Area.
