Description
Ickburgh War Memorial is a First World War memorial located in an enclosed area on the north side of Ashburton Road.
The memorial features a stone statue of a seated mourning woman, who is draped in a shawl covering her head and shoulders. She holds a wreath and leans against a jagged piece of rock. The statue is set on a four-stepped base that rises to a square pedestal with a moulded cornice, supported by pilasters at each corner. These pilasters have chamfered stops and rest on a narrow block foot, which is chamfered along the top edge except at the corners. The entire structure is topped by a two-tiered plinth on a narrow, square stone base.
On the south face of the pedestal, an inscription in leaded lettering reads: "THIS MEMORIAL/ WAS ERECTED IN/ GRATEFUL MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF THIS/ PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR/ LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918." The names of the deceased are also inscribed in leaded lettering on the east and west faces of the pedestal.
The memorial is enclosed by a rectangular area bounded by a regular-coursed brick dwarf wall topped with decorative metal railings featuring fleur-de-lis finials. Entrance gates are located on the southern side of the enclosure.
