Description

This is a former farmhouse, dating to the late 18th century with a 17th-century core. It is built of colourwashed brick and has a roof of black pantiles. The front facade is symmetrical, with three bays featuring four 3-light and one 2-light mullion and transom windows with leaded glazing and metal casements. There are skewback arches above the windows. A raised and fielded panelled front door is set within an architrave doorcase and topped with a moulded pediment. A sawtooth cornice runs along the top of the building. Three blocked 17th-century windows are visible in the south gable-end, each with a rectangular hood mould. A single gable-end stack is also present. Later extensions have been added to the sides and rear of the building. The house has a historical association as the birthplace of Matthew Vassar (born 1792), the founder of Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York state.
