Description
The Temple of Mercury, located 155 metres east-southeast of Lynford Hall, is a gazebo built around 1862 and designed by W. Burns. It is constructed from limestone ashlar and originally featured a lead or copper roof. The structure is circular in shape and supported by six Roman Doric columns on a polygonal three-step base. About one third of the circumference is occupied by a plain wall. A continuous plain entablature supports the remnants of a wooden truss that forms a hemi-spherical cupola. Sections of fallen plaster cornice are still visible from the original ceiling, and there is a stone bench against the wall.
