Description
Hardingham Grove is a house dating from the early 17th century, which was completely refaced and extended in the late 19th century. It features a timber frame that is faced with brick and has pantile roofs. The earlier sections of the house were built in two phases, forming an L shape, with Victorian additions at both the front and rear. The building is two storeys high with attics and has a symmetrical three-bay entrance facade. This facade includes a slightly advanced central aedicule with flanking pilaster buttresses that serve as chimney flues. The entrance has a two-leaf front door with decorative hinges, topped by a four-centred head and a rectangular hood mould. Above the door are two-light and single casement windows with rectangular hood moulds and a curvilinear gable. There is a reticulated moulded brick frieze above the doorway, and the flanking window bays are slightly advanced, featuring sash windows with glazing bars beneath skewback arches. A dentilated stringcourse and rectangular hood moulds are present as well. Other facades are styled similarly, including a particularly decorative cantilevered passageway with a timber frame supported by carved brackets and herring-bone brick nogging. The house has several moulded brick chimney shafts. Inside, some original timber framing remains, including a clasped purlin roof and a butt-purlin roof with collar, featuring lower butt purlins of square section set diagonally.
