Description
Clothall Bury is a farmhouse that was once a manor house, originally built in the 15th century. It underwent alterations and extensions in the mid-17th century and again in 1868. The building features a timber frame with roughcast walls and a plain tile roof, standing two storeys high with a long range of five bays. The front has six sash windows from around 1868, which have vertical glazing bars.
On the left end, there is a two-window parallel extension that has sawtooth red brick eaves, and towards the right, there is a gable-ended porch extension with similar eaves, both dating from 1868. The far right bay is a mid-17th century cross-wing addition. To the left of the porch is a 15th-century cross-wing that was originally built as an open hall, featuring a crown post roof that is exposed in the upper room, along with smoke-blackened timbers. There is evidence of a 17th-century extension on the porch side.
The main hall, located to the left of the porch, has an eaves gabled dormer on the exterior. Inside, it showcases an unusual upper-cruck roof with two narrow blades forming a depressed arch, along with an 18th-century partition and fireplace. A mid-17th century inserted floor beam is also present. The bay to the left has a higher roof line with a large exposed tie beam, which shows no smoke-blackening, suggesting it was likely built as two storeys. Beyond this is another bay with lighter framing, which may be an 18th-century addition.
