Description
This is a house dating from the 16th century or earlier, originally an open hall house. A floor was inserted at a later date, and an early 17th-century timber-framed chimney was added. A brick chimney was built in the 18th century, and an 18th or early 19th-century bread oven is located in an outshut to the rear wing. The house has a timber frame on a red brick sill, with roughcast external walls and a steep roof covered in old red tiles, with slate on the rear outshut. A small outhouse on the northwest side is enclosed with dark weatherboarding and has a thatched roof covered with sheets. The house is two storeys high, with a three-cell internal layout, featuring a lobby-entry plan facing east. It has a short rear wing containing a stair and kitchen, extending westward from the rear of the chimney, which is positioned a third of the way along the north end. The front elevation features three windows and three gabled dormers at the eaves, along with a gabled porch in line with the chimney. The windows are flush casements. Inside, the exposed timber frame reveals original features, including some wattle-and-daub panels, jowled posts, unjowled mid-bay posts, curved tension braces, and an edge-halved scarf joint with bridled butts in the wallplate. A brick chimney incorporates the tie-beam of a roof truss, and there is a clasped-purlin truss. Several plank doors are moulded.
