Description
The Church of St Mary is a parish church with origins dating back to the 13th century. The earliest features include the chancel, which has original lancet windows on the north and south walls. The nave and the north and south aisles were built in the mid-14th century and feature four bay arcades, with a clerestory above the south arcade. The west tower, constructed around 1450, has three stages, an embattled parapet, and a small leaded needle spire. The south porch, dating from the 15th century, has undergone significant restoration, along with other later additions and restorations to the church. Notable interior fittings include a 14th-century altar tomb with effigies of a knight and his lady, showcasing detailed armour and costume. Additional fittings of interest comprise several brasses, particularly a miniature late 15th-century knight and lady, a 15th-century chancel screen, and a pulpit from the 17th to 18th century, featuring inlaid wood shields with the arms of Leventhorp and others.
