Description
Rockells Barn Farmhouse is a late medieval farmhouse that was remodeled in the early 17th century and is now used as a house. The building features a render over a timber frame and has a gabled thatch roof with brick ridge and end stacks that were rebuilt in the 20th century. It has a 3-unit plan with a service area to the right and a former hall to the left, although the cross wing to the left was demolished around 1930. The farmhouse is two storeys high and has a four-window range. There are flat rendered arches over the central door, 19th century horizontally-sliding sash windows, and a three-light casement window, all with glazing bars. A mid-20th century one-storey extension is located at the rear.
Inside, the hall to the left retains exposed timber framing from the late medieval period. An early 17th century inserted floor features bead-moulded joists and a large chamfered beam with elaborate stops. The 20th century stairs incorporate reset 17th century balusters. The open fireplaces have been repaired with mid-20th century brick, but the bressummers and brickwork of the stack date back to the early 17th century. The room to the right of the hall has a plain beam and joists of large scantling, along with a trimmer joist indicating the position of a former stair. The structure includes four bays of framing, with jowled posts that are arch-braced to the tie beams of an early 17th century clasped purlin roof.
