Description
The Church of St Mary the Virgin is a Grade I listed building located in Little Sampford. This church, primarily constructed in the early 14th century, features flint and stone rubble. The west tower indicates a pause in construction after the lower two stages were completed, likely due to the impact of the Black Death. The upper stages were completed after 1350. The tower includes set-back buttresses that transition into octagonal corner turrets topped with plain pinnacles, an embattled parapet, and a small 17th-century leaded spire.
The nave, which has quatrefoil clerestorey windows, dates from the 14th century and features an arcade with lozenge-shaped piers and attached shafts. The chancel was rebuilt, and a north porch was added in the late 15th century. The south porch, made of red and blue brick, is from the 17th century, and the nave roof was renewed in 1682. There has been some restoration work in the 19th century.
Inside, the church contains several monuments from the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, including those of Sir Edward Greene (died 1556), William Twedy (died 1605) and his wife, and a standing wall monument for Bridget Peck (died 1712). The church is recognized for its architectural and historical significance.
