Description
High Rodingbury Farmhouse is a house dating from the 18th century and earlier. It features a combination of timber framing and brick, both of which are plastered, with a tiled roof. The eastern part of the building is square in plan and was constructed in the 18th century, serving as the front of an older timber-framed structure to the west. The farmhouse has two storeys. On the ground floor of the east elevation, there is a central door with six panels and a wooden porch supported by fluted Doric columns, which is characteristic of the 18th century. Flanking the door are two sash windows with marginal lights from the early 19th century. The first floor contains three sash windows from the 19th century. Access to the property was refused in January 1983. The farmhouse is situated within the moat of an ancient manorial site, close to the parish church. In 1921, the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments described it as 'Modern (that is, post 1714), but at the back is a small block timber framed and plastered, and of around 1700; the roof is tiled'. It has been listed as Grade III since April 1952 and is considered to merit an upgrade to Grade II based on architectural evidence visible from the outside. The rear part of the building is likely to have historic interest internally. The decision to upgrade the listing without an internal inspection was authorized by the supervising Inspector of Historic Buildings of the Department of the Environment on 27 January 1983. Photographs are available at the National Monuments Record and from the Essex County Council Historic Buildings & Conservation Section.
