Description
The archway located 30 yards east of the Castle is a classical structure built by Charles Grey in 1747. It is the remains of a rotunda or garden temple and is constructed from a mix of stone, stone and flint rubble, some Roman tiles, and modern brick. The keystone of the archway, which is approximately 5 feet 5 inches above the ground, is a substantial piece of weathered masonry. The entire archway stands about 10 feet high and is topped with a rough pediment. The south-west face has undergone significant restoration and has a slight concave shape, while the north-east face serves as the front of the archway.
