Description
No. 106 on Hythe Hill is a house that was converted into flats around the late 17th century and was later remodeled and extended in the early to mid-19th century. The building features a front made of Flemish bond red brick with a stuccoed parapet on the sides and rear, topped by a concrete tile lipped roof. It has brick lateral axial and end stacks.
The house has an L-shaped plan. The late 17th-century front range includes a central entrance hall with a room on either side, and to the left is a long 19th-century rear wing. The building is two stories high and has a symmetrical front with three windows. The windows are 19th-century four-pane sashes with stuccoed flat arches that have keyblocks and sills. The central door is flanked by pilasters and features an entablature, along with a 19th-century panelled door. The rear wing has 12-pane sashes.
Inside, there is a mid-19th-century open well staircase fitted into a curved corner, featuring a round-headed niche, an ornate cast iron balustrade, and a moulded mahogany handrail that is wreathed over the curtail. The late 17th-century roof structure over the front range is of the joggled framed purlin type and includes some re-used medieval timber.
