Description
Assers is a house that was formerly two tenements, dating from the 15th century with alterations from the 17th century and a 20th-century extension. It features a timber frame that is plastered externally, topped with a clay peg tile roof, and has two storeys. The building has a three-window range with various 20th-century casements. It follows a traditional crosswing and hall plan, although the original aspect of the house has been reversed.
Most of the frame of the crosswing remains intact and is made of high-quality oak, featuring jowled storey posts, diamond mullioned windows, and external bracing. The crosswing jetties out to the east. Inside, there is a simple crown post roof that was originally hipped and gabled to the west, but both ends are now gabled. The building includes chamfered bridging joists with run-out stops and soffit tenons to the floor joists. The crosswing consists of two bays, with one bay of the original open hall still present. An inserted floor features moulded bridging joists and floor joists with hollow chamfers and a central roll. The roof has been raised, and the rebuilt roof has a hip to the south. There are remnants of a green formal foliate design on one high end of the hall.
