Description

Springfield Lyons is a complex range of buildings dating from the 17th to 19th centuries, now combined into a single house. The property comprises five main elements facing the garden and two facing the entrance.

The right-hand section of the garden front is a late 17th-century timber-framed house, re-rendered in stucco in the early 19th century. It is two storeys and has an attic, with a plain tile roof, a central stack, and two gabled dormers. Originally, it had a four-window range to the first floor featuring sliding sash windows with glazing bars. However, two windows to the left have been replaced by an early 19th-century timber oriel with canted sides, five windows, and a plain tiled top supported on cast-iron brackets. The ground floor has three smaller sash windows.

Adjoining this, in the centre, is a lower early 17th-century timber-framed house, also stuccoed in the early 19th century. It has a plain tile roof and end stacks, and was originally two storeys and an attic with a two-window range and large boarded gables. Later 19th-century three-sided bays with tile roofs now project from the first floor, reaching up into the gables. The ground floor features three irregularly spaced sliding sash windows with glazing bars in a cased frame.

To the left of this is an 1800s red brick house with a hipped plain tile roof and end wall stacks. It is double pile, two storeys high with a basement. Originally a five-window range, two windows have been replaced with later 19th-century yellow brick and stone. A three-window, full-height bay has been added, disrupting the original facade. A central, long, round-headed stair window with a radiating brick head and glazing bars sits over the doorway, which is framed by a plain wood architrave. The right-hand side has a two-window range of sliding sash windows with glazing bars in flat-arched surrounds. A plain wood eaves cornice sits at the top.

Inside, there are several six-panel doors, timber cornices, and a staircase with a bracketed string and mahogany rail. A fireplace in the southeast corner room features Ionic columns and figures in relief. The rear elevation is stuccoed, with only two windows visible; the rest are obscured by a large, rendered mid-to-late 19th-century extension with a hipped plain tile roof, two storeys, and attics.

The entrance front features a long range, stuccoed and with a plain tile roof, a continuous ridge, and an off-centre brick stack. A gabled half-dormer feature is present to the right. The windows are a mix of sliding sash windows with glazing bars, casements, and one five-sided oriel bay with sliding sash windows and glazing bars reaching up into a gable. This range is likely an early 18th-century double range, extended in the late 18th or early 19th century behind another part of the house.
