Description

Lodge Cottages, located 170 metres north-west of Ingatestone Hall, are a pair of attached lodge cottages built in the mid-19th century. They are constructed from red brick in English bond and feature a roof made of handmade red clay tiles, showcasing a Tudor Revival style. The main structure is aligned north-west to south-east and has an internal stack at the rear centre. The two front wings project forward, with an internal stack positioned between them. The cottages are two storeys high, with a later single-storey wing added to the rear centre in the late 19th century.

On the ground floor of each front wing, there is a three-light mullioned and transomed casement window with a straight head. The brick mullions and transom are stop-chamfered, and the window surround is chamfered in two orders, featuring a continuous weathered drip mould. Each first floor has a similar window without the transom, and both cottages have a two-light casement window on the first floor of the main range. All windows are latticed with lead in small panes. The doors of each cottage are located in the main range and are plain boarded, with jambs and four-centred arches that are also chamfered in two orders.

The cottages have crow-stepped gables, with plaster trefoils above the first-floor windows on the front gables. The ridge tiles are crested, and the front stack has small attached diagonal shafts and a dogtooth course below the head. The rear elevation of each cottage features two plain casement windows with segmental arches on the ground floor, although the inner windows are partly obscured by the rear extension. The right cottage has a 20th-century porch made of light materials at the rear. These cottages are included for their group value.
