Description

The building is a byre located 80 metres north-west of Ingatestone Hall, dating from the mid-19th century. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with black engineering brick dressings, and has a roof covered with red clay 'Roman' tiles. The byre is a single range facing west-northwest and is adjacent to a timber-framed barn at its northern corner. There is a 20th-century range that abuts the byre to the west-northwest, but it is not of special architectural or historic interest.

The byre features six wide entrances for cattle, which are evenly spaced and have rounded dressings made of engineering bricks for protection. One of these entrances is now located inside the 20th-century range in front of the byre. There is also a doorway for a halved door, which was dismounted but present at the time of the survey. The south gable end is weatherboarded above half-height.

Inside, the byre is partitioned into six equal cattle stalls, although one partition has been removed. At the southern end, there is a feedstuff room, and a feeding passage runs behind the stalls, accessible from both ends. The brick troughs, which have a wooden front edge, are complete. The wall separating the stalls from the feeding passage is dipped at each stall. The roof features clasped purlins. This byre is a notable example of a scientifically designed agricultural building from the mid-19th century, particularly due to the use of engineering bricks to withstand wear at the cattle entrances.
