Description

The Grange is a house located on Back Lane in Fryerning, dating from the 16th century or earlier, with alterations made in the 18th and 20th centuries. The building features a timber-framed and plastered structure with a facade of red and blue brick laid in Flemish bond, topped with handmade red clay tiles. It has a double range plan facing southeast, where the front range likely includes the original timber structure of the earlier house, while the rear range is an 18th-century addition. There is an internal stack located at the rear of the front range, to the right of center. A late 18th-century double range extension is situated to the right, and a late 19th-century single-range extension is found at the left rear.

The house is two stories tall, with an 18th-century brick facade featuring blue headers arranged in a regular pattern. On the ground floor, there are four sashes with 6 over 6 lights arranged irregularly, and on the first floor, there are six 18th-century sashes with 4 over 4 lights that are regularly spaced. All windows have flat arches made of gauged brick and plain reveals. A 20th-century half-glazed door is positioned to the right of the center, topped with a moulded flat canopy supported by carved scrolled brackets. A raised band of one course is present at the first-floor level, and the building has a plain parapet with stone coping and hipped roofs.

The interior has been extensively re-styled in the 18th and 20th centuries, with no visible timber structure, but it retains proportions that include a door and chimney near the left end, two windows to the right, and a two-storey gabled cross-wing at the left end, both with tiled roofs, which appears to be the reverse of the current layout.
