Description
Trueloves is a house built in 1859 by William White. It is constructed of polychrome brickwork, primarily red brick with stripes and decorative elements in black and gault brick. The roof is slate, featuring fishscale pattern bands, with brick chimney stacks and cusped bargeboards. The house is designed in a Gothic style and now has a U-plan due to alterations and extensions to the northeast side, along with numerous single-storey service blocks to the rear.
The front of the house has a central projecting gable with a rebuilt hipped oriel. It is supported by jettied brackets. A pointed arched porch stands beneath the gable, featuring massive marble columns with moulded capitals and bases. The main block of the house rises two storeys with attics, displaying an irregular pattern of windows. Three casement dormers are present, each with a 'French' style open gable. On the first floor of the main range, the west side has four pointed arched windows over a single light and two linked pointed arched windows. The east side features three similar pointed arched windows above a later crenellated square bay window. The unaltered west elevation displays two gables and paired pointed arched windows to the first and attic storeys, along with a gabled porch and larger casements under segmental arched heads. A typical White buttress is located near the rear of the flank.
At the rear of this range is a single-storey block with a pointed arched door/window, all connected to a yard wall with gate piers and four-gabled detailing. A rear range, partially single-storey and partially one-storey with attic, incorporates three gabled dormers with pointed arched windows. The southeast elevation of the main range has been altered with large bay windows.
The interior has been altered, but many original William White features remain including a butler’s pantry. Trueloves forms a group with the stable block and dairy/game larder (listed separately).
