Description

Churchview is a house that dates back to the 15th and 16th centuries, with significant rebuilding occurring in the late 17th century and some renovations in the 20th century. The structure is timber-framed and plastered, with some timber framing exposed on the first floor. It features thatched roofs that are half hipped on the left side. There is a plastered brick ridge stack located to the left of center and an end stack on the south gable of the cross wing.

The house has two storeys and a cellar, arranged in a three-unit plan, with the main range on the left completely rebuilt in the late 17th century, while the short cross wing from the 16th century has been reroofed. A 20th-century boarded door is positioned in the original lobby entry. The ground floor has two casement windows, and there is one casement window on the first floor of the cross wing. Additionally, there are three first-floor 18th-century iron casements with leaded lights.

Inside, the house features three hearths, including one in the cross wing with a chamfered elliptical arch. The interior displays exposed floor frames and wall frames that show reused timbers, as well as part of the truss from the original medieval hall, which includes wide tension braces from a central post. There are openings for two mullioned windows with rebates for shutters in the rear gable of the cross wing. A timber in the south wall bears the inscription 'YY James Bradford.' The interior also contains two medieval stone niches, which may have been introduced by Mr. Ricketts, a stone mason who worked on the church in the 19th century. During recent renovations, carved timbers were added from Blackthorn Cottage in Earls Colne, Suffolk.
