Description
The Old Rectory is a house that was formerly the rectory, built in the late 18th century with contributions from Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. In 1802, the front elevation was remodeled and the house was re-roofed. Additional alterations occurred at the end of the 19th century and in the 1960s and 1970s. The building is constructed of red brick and features a hipped, pantiled roof with a restored wood modillion and dentil eaves cornice. It has two ridge stacks and consists of two main storeys with a smaller attic or second storey, while the service part at the rear is only two storeys high.
The principal elevation has five bays with finely gauged arches over recessed hung sashes, which have been restored and consist of twelve panes each. The attic windows have six panes each, and the four full-length casements on the ground floor date from around 1890. The central doorway features a doorcase with a broken pediment, fluted pilasters, and a Doric frieze. The doorway is round-headed and includes a door with six raised and fielded panels, along with swagged glazing bars in the fanlight. The rear wall has been rebuilt and redesigned by the current owner.
Inside, there is an original cut string staircase with square section balusters and turned and fluted newels. The plaster cornice decoration in the two main ground floor rooms is original late 18th century work. It is believed that Charles Lamb, a friend of Rev William Butt, the Rector of Little Wilbraham, stayed here on several occasions.
