Description
28 Church Road is an early 17th century house designed in an L-plan. It is constructed of narrow red brick and features a plain tiled roof with two linked ranges that have shaped gable ends. The sides have a saw-tooth eaves cornice. There are two projecting chimney stacks on the north side, one with two and the other with three diagonally set detached shafts. A band course runs above the first floor and between the first and ground floors.
At the first floor, there are two later hung sash windows with glazing bars set in moulded architraves, and two similar windows at the ground floor. The central doorway is framed by an early 19th century doorcase with pilasters, a simplified Doric frieze, and a shaped cornice, leading to a panelled door topped by a rectangular fanlight with glazing bars. A notable feature is the original semi-circular headed staircase window in the north wall, which has leaded lights and a moulded mullion.
On the south wall, there is a sundial. Inside, the house contains an early 17th century staircase with three flights and a landing, featuring a closed-string design with turned balusters, a moulded rail, and square section newel posts with carved finials. To the north-east, there is an adjoining 17th century kitchen, also in red brick, with a plain tiled roof and a dentil cornice. Additionally, there is a 17th century red brick curtilage wall to the south-east, which has saw-tooth brackets at the coping.
