Description

The Old Rectory is a house that was formerly used as a rectory, constructed in two phases. The main part of the house dates from the mid to late 18th century, while a large extension to the east was added in the early 19th century. The east range is built of gault brick and features a parapetted, hipped slate roof along with a moulded main cornice. This section has two storeys and seven bays, including a recessed central bay. There is a stone band at the first-floor sill height, and the windows are recessed hung sashes with narrow glazing bars set in flat arches. A Roman Doric portico made of wood leads to a double doorway, which has an upper half that is glazed.

The adjoining range to the west, built in the mid to late 18th century, is timber framed and roughcast rendered, with a 19th-century slate roof and end stacks. This section has a plan of two bays with a narrower central stair bay and also consists of two storeys. It features two late 18th-century tripartite hung sashes with glazing bars that are flush with the facade, positioned on either side of a single hung sash window. The central doorway has a doorcase with a moulded architrave, a pulvinated frieze, and a flat hood supported by scroll brackets, along with a panelled door. There is also a late 18th-century bow window.

Inside, there is a 19th-century open string staircase with two flights and a landing, which has been inserted into the central bay of the 18th-century rear range. The ground floor rooms of the early 19th-century house retain original plaster cornice mouldings and a marble fireplace.
