Description
The Manor House, located on Cambridge Road in Fenstanton, is an early to mid 18th-century farmhouse that was part of the Manor of Fenstanton, which was owned by 'Capability' Brown in the late 18th century. The building is designed in an L-plan and stands two storeys high with attics. It features a steeply pitched hipped roof covered with slates, two symmetrical ridge stacks, and a gable stack on the rear wing with a parapet gable. The eaves cornice is projecting and modillioned.
The façade consists of three bays, with the central bay slightly projecting and constructed of soft red brick. Ashlar pilasters mark the quoins, and there is a band between the floors along with cappings to the plinth. The first floor has a symmetrical arrangement of seven recessed hung sash windows with glazing bars, set in flat gauged brick arches with key blocks. Flanking the central doorway, which features the original eight raised and fielded panelled door, are similar windows. The doorway is framed by a 19th-century reeded doorcase that includes corner bosses and a projecting cornice.
Inside, the Manor House boasts a fine original open-string staircase and a fire plaque. There is also a Sun Insurance plaque indicating a purchase by L Brown.
