Description
King's College Chapel was built between 1446 and 1515, with the stained glass added between 1515 and 1531 and the woodwork crafted between 1532 and 1575. This building is an exceptional example of craftsmanship from its time, with all fittings being noteworthy. The fan-vaulted roof was designed and constructed by John Wastell, master-mason, between 1512 and 1515. The timber roof, consisting of 24 bays, was built by Martin Prentice and Richard Russel from 1508 to 1515. The east end and altar were remodeled during a general internal restoration in 1968. The chapel features several impressive 16th-century doors with fine locks and other iron fittings, along with an 18th-century font. The windows contain one of the finest and most complete collections of late medieval stained glass in Europe, although much of the side-chapel glass is modern. There is an early 16th-century brass eagle lectern with candle sconces added by Butterfield and a base by Rattee in 1854. The organ, built by Renee Harris, dates from 1688. The magnificent oak screen, carved between 1533 and 1536, includes central doors added in 1636. The oak choir stalls were also made between 1533 and 1536. The chapel was paved with marble in 1702 and Portland stone in 1775. A monument to John Churchill, the only son of the Duke of Marlborough, who died in 1702, is also present.
