Description

THE OLD SCHOOLS 1. 942 The Cockerell Building (Squire Law Library) TL 4458 SE 6/307 26.4.50 I 2. 1837-40. By C R Cockerell. Built on the site of the old hall of King's College, it forms the northernmost range of the Old Schools buildings. Ashlar faced. 3 storeys. The entrance front has a Roman Doric giant order, the long fronts Composite giant pilasters. The basement is rusticated. The main building is of 9 bays with the entrance hall projecting on the East and a smaller projection on the West. The interior is in 2 main rooms. The lower library with free-standing Doric columns and Greek ornamentation. The Upper Library has a semi-circular barrel vault with diagonal coffering. There are 2 full-length marble statues; George I by Rysbrack circa 1736 and George II by Joseph Wilton circa 1765. (RCHM 17).
