Description
The Old Vicarage is a former vicarage, now a house, built in 1862. It was designed by the Luton architect George Halton for the Reverend James Milne-Hamilton and is in a muscular Gothic style. The building is constructed of red brick with blue banding and polychrome dressings, topped by a steeply pitched slate roof. It has an asymmetrical, irregular T-plan layout with two storeys and attics, featuring irregular windows that are mainly pointed arched sashes.
The main (south) elevation has a projecting gable on the right side, which includes a double window on the first floor, a three-light canted bay window on the ground floor, and a pointed arched doorcase at the angle. To the left, there are two gabled windows and a square bay window at the centre of the ground floor. The east front features a projecting gable with a double window on the first floor, a bay window on the ground floor, and a projecting chimneystack. The rear of the building has a series of gables.
Inside, the property retains original fireplaces, some with marble surrounds, doors with chamfered panels, and original panelling and mouldings. Both the main staircase and the servants' staircase are also preserved.
