9/17 Observatory in grounds of Howard's House

GV II

Observatory. Early-mid C19 (earliest reference to it is 1846). Red brick, with painted metal roof. Small octagonal block, with rectangular block to N. Single storeyed, raised above a basement. W elevation has 4 panel door reached by wooden steps. E elevation has plank door surmounted by small single-light casement to octagonal block and low plank door surmounted by 2 small casements to rectangular block. Octagonal block has conical roof with sliding panel, rectangular block has flat roof. Said to retain astronomical and meteorological instruments. (Bedfordshire Record Office, CRT 130/CARD/6)
