Description

Malting Farmhouse and No. 275 Bedford Road is a farmhouse built in 1771 for Samuel Whitbread, possibly incorporating an earlier building. The structure is made of red brick, with No. 275 featuring a pebbledash exterior. It has an old clay tile roof that is hipped at the front block. The main house is L-shaped with projecting blocks at the north and east corners, and it has two storeys and attics. No. 275, which adjoins to the southwest, also has an L-plan and forms a small courtyard between the two blocks.

The front of the farmhouse is not quite symmetrical due to the differing widths of the two projecting side bays. There are brick bands at the first floor and cornice level, topped with a stone-coped parapet. Although the original plans indicate a central door, it has been moved to the left-hand bay. The current entrance features a part-glazed door with geometric glazing bars in a moulded surround, topped by a pair of plaques with the Whitbread initials and a flat hood with a dentil cornice supported by carved consoles. The windows are arranged in a 1:3:1 pattern, all with geometric glazing bars and set under flat arches. There are dummy windows at the centre of the first floor and at the far right on both the ground and first floors. The house has two box dormers with casements that also have glazing bars.

On the northwest elevation, there is a large semicircular two-storey bay on the left-hand side, with all windows matching those on the front. The rear elevation of No. 275 features mostly two and three-light horizontal sash windows with glazing bars, along with plank doors.
